Reading a certificate

What a real COA has to contain.

Five fields separate a certificate from a graphic. If any of these is missing from a document you have been handed, the document is not evidence of anything.

A lot number

Tied to the specific batch the vial came from. A certificate with no lot number cannot be matched to anything and proves nothing about what you are holding.

The analytical method

Reversed-phase HPLC, with the column, gradient and detection wavelength stated. A purity number with no method behind it is an assertion.

Identity confirmation

Mass spectrometry showing the observed mass against the theoretical mass. Purity says how much of one thing is present. Only identity says which thing.

The chromatogram itself

Not just the integrated number — the trace. Peak shape and baseline tell you whether the integration was reasonable.

A date and a signatory

The date of analysis and the laboratory that performed it. An undated certificate from an unnamed lab is a design exercise.

Net peptide content

Often omitted. A vial can be 99% pure and still contain less peptide than labelled, because lyophilised material carries counterion and residual water.
